At thirteen years of age, Stephen Stafford is causing quite a stir at Morehouse College. Stafford has a triple major in pre-med, math and computer science. Though he loves playing video games and playing his drum set, he is no typical teenager. He is exactly the kind of student I had in mind when I wrote the book, “Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about College,” because he shows the power of the black male mind when we put our energy into things that matter most. Over the 17-years I’ve spent teaching at the college level, I have never seen anything more impressive, nor more reflective of what black men represent.

“I’ve never taught a student as young as Stephen, and it’s been amazing,” said computer science professor Sonya Dennis. “He’s motivating other students to do better and makes them want to step up their game.”

Stafford began his college career at the age of 11, after being home-schooled by his mother. Stafford’s mother said that when Stafford began to teach her instead of being taught by her, she knew he needed to be in a college environment. Since that time, he has excelled in his classes and continues to grow intellectually.

Italian product manager and web designer Francesco Mugnai recently added a collection of images to his blog touting some of the most beautiful images of abandoned spots and modern ruins that he’d ever seen. The images Mugnai has captured come from empty castles, shuttered power plants, and dilapidated churches around the world. From a sunken yacht in Antarctica to a forever-closed amusement park in Japan, these images all make up a sort of anti-phoenix; rather than rising as new from the ashes, these husks remain preserved in decomposition, forcing viewers to confront the strange beauty of ruination.

What I don’t get is why black people are so invested in perpetuating the lie that more black men are incarcerated than in college. Well, I’m sure it’s related to the “endangered black male” myth (which is related to anti-feminism) but I think that does more good than harm. You can still talk about the racism inherent in the criminal system without saying that practically all black men in their 20s are incarcerated. Especially since that’s definitely not true.

The margin is too fucking huge. It’s baffling how long this lie has been perpetuated!

This specific age group was chosen for a reason (18-24). Only around 37 percent of black students who enroll in college graduate from four-year institutions within six years. Nationally, the average six-year graduation rate for all students is 57 percent. Only about 41 percent of African Americans who attend college graduate, many drop out after the sixth year. So in looking at only enrollment rate you’re only getting part of the picture. Also, when you look at the age group of 25-29, about 10.4% of the entire African-American male population in the United States is incarcerated, by far the largest racial or ethnic group—by comparison, 2.4% of Hispanic men and 1.2% of white men in that same age group were incarcerated. Also, it is not a lie that more black men are incarcerated then in prison. In 2000 there were 791,600 black men in prison and 603,032 enrolled in college. So please, stop preaching to African Americans about how we need to stop perpetuating negative statistics. We know the numbers, and the situation is pretty dire.

We have the highest rate of unemployment, the highest rate of incarceration, the highest disparity of wealth, and the highest impoverished percentage . The facts are African Americans are worse off than other ethnic groups, particularly whites, because of racial oppression and class exploitation. The double oppression has not changed with the first Black president.

What you’re saying is nothing new.. And as a people we know of the flawed justice system and the double oppression probably more than double in certain circumstances. The fact that we are more impoverished than any other race, well lets go back to the 1930’s Great Depression. As of today of we had no back up plan things would be the same. Right now it’s about race and class obviously. But that back up plan aka unemployment is a different story but warfare, and TANF, African Americans aren’t the sole users but anyway. The fact that you said ” stop preaching to African Americans about how we need to stop perpetuating negative statistics.”… Baffling.
